The intervertebral discs lie between the layers of the vertebral bone in the spine. They have a central soft nucleus and an outer more fibrotic layer. When the outer layer gets damaged either through trauma or wear and tear it allows for the nucleus to push against it causing a disc bulge. If the material breaks through the outer layer it creates a herniation, the so-called slipped disc. It may press on the spinal nerve causing radiating pain down the leg or cause inflammation of the nerve. There may also be back pain and numbness and weakness of the leg. It is usually painful to sit down, walk, stand and bend forward. It may be helpful to lie on one’s back with one’s legs raised.
Using an icepack on the affected area of the spine, should help to reduce the inflammation and some of the pain. It is important to modify ones posture to reduce the pain and aid recovery. There are also some exercises which help to strengthen the back and abdominals in order to prevent the return of the problem. Some lifestyle decisions such as stopping smoking, can help prevent the condition, by creating a healthier disc. The osteopath can help by giving treatment to reduce the tension in the surrounding muscle, mobilizing the joint, and other restricted joints, and giving advice on posture and over which exercises are helpful.
